One Superpower - The Power of all Powers

_zestimony_8_.png

What a title! The power of all powers, indeed, I believe I need this superpower, trust me, it is nothing too much, but it is nothing too common as well.

I am not craving to be the Jesus of our day, or something close; I am not even desiring to be one of those fictional characters you see in the movies, some who can influence other people's actions, some that could read thoughts, some who could carry unreal weights, or even some who are invincible. No, I don't need those, all I need is the "Power of All Powers**.

No, no! Trust me, I am not trying to be God or some form of deity; I do not want to control the elements - I want to be no Avatar, I don't want to bend air or other elements.

I just need the Power of all Powers, this power is one that is pragmatic for humans, that could come with only obvious benefits, with very few downsides (if any). This power seems simple, yet, we all lack a measure of it. For humans (the human man and the human woman), this power to me is the Power of All Powers, and it is:

An Unreal Level of Full Self-Control

Disclaimer: This is entirely fictional and may not fully express/reflect my beliefs, thoughts and emotions. It hopes to entertain first, and maybe educate.

The Power of All Powers: Full Self-Control

What's so special about self-control? Is it not something we all have? Is it even a superpower?

Looking at a basic definition of self-control, you may consider self-control as one's ability to show self-restraint, or basically, control oneself.

To appreciate the superpower nature of self-control, you need to understand how much of your life is lived for others, or put better, influenced by other people both around us and globally. Our time, schedule, decisions, activities, and more in some way, are being influenced by external factors.

Think about some major decisions you have made as a person, maybe, decisions about marriage, relationships, education, residency, travels, entertainment, and more. Look deeper into these decisions, and if you will be able to make an honest appraisal, you are pleasing one person with each of these decisions, or at least, someone or something influenced these decisions.

When you will come to realize this better is when things go south. Then you could easily find someone to blame or some "what ifs" to repeat time and again. Also, conversely, when things go well (I wanted to say north 😂), you will find someone too to be grateful to, or at least, a situation or circumstance to thank.

NOW, LET'S USE OUR IMAGINATION

Imagine a world where you own yourself, your thoughts, your emotions and your decisions entirely. You definitely receive inputs from others and your surroundings, but instead of these shaping your decisions and actions, they just serve as facts that you could consider when coming up with this ultimate decision that you have full control of.

Imagine a world where your choices are not shaped by the desire to please anyone but yourself; your decisions and actions are not based on impulses and marketing activities by businesses around you. But you have full control of your choices and actions.

Also, finally, imagine that world where you are not poised to go after the crowd, but you are fully convinced of your choices and paths in life.

NOW, STOP YOUR IMAGINATIONS

Self-control is an unreal level of superpower. What is more? We are not designed for this, our brains don't like it, in fact, our brains are happier when we lose self-control than try to achieve it. It is more taxing and requires an unreal level of discipline and brain work to develop self-control than to be unconstrained.

Self-control is basically your ability to override short-term impulses in the favour of long-term rewards, especially when these rewards are not in tandem with your long-term goals. I will call it your ability to resist temptation. But why am I reiterating this? Here are some ways a lack of self-control has caused you:

  • Remember that trade you took that made you lose significant funds? That was a clear lack of self-control.
  • You remember cursing at someone recently? Now you are in a strained relationship with that person. That was clearly a lack of constraint.
  • You heard of girls sleeping with animals lately for some cash? Lack of self-control pro.
  • Did you just do something you are regretting over? Lack of self-control pro max.
  • You have been worried about your weight gains, but you just finished a bag of popcorn by 11 pm. You are saying no to self-control.

Thinking about the above-painted scenarios, it is clear that you need one superpower to override them, and that superpower is self-control.

More self-control could mean better health, better chances of success, better relationships and fewer chances of regrets.

Say No to Self-control

You remember this line:

I just need the Power of all Powers, this power is one that is pragmatic for humans, that could come with only obvious benefits, with very few downsides (if any).

I was lying! Humans are not designed to have full control of themselves. For Godsake, we are social beings, and must be influenced by those around us, sometimes, deliberately, and other times, unwittingly.

That's the single reason I consider full self-control to be a superpower and an unreal one at that. We are not made this way. Exercising too much self-control may have some darksides, you are basically leaving out room for chances and socialization, but what is more.

Too much self-control will make you lose out on some fun experiences, which may even lead to long-term regrets; it may lead to increased workloads which may result in burnout.

Final Words

Self-control could be a superpower! Self-control is also not a superpower.

After writing, and even going through some related posts, it is just evident that as humans, we are better the way we are. We obviously do not need more powers than what we have already. All humans have some measure of power that is common, you may not have much, and neither may I have less.

For those who will like to read people's minds, we already have that power, just that we cannot predict accurately; for those who will like to influence others, we are already doing so, just that it may take more time and work; for those who will like to influence natural forces, using tools available, we can exert a fair measure of influence; for those who need an unreal level of self-control, we already have enough, we just need to nurture them more for our benefit.

At the end of the day, once a human has more powers than that shared by the general human population, it adds to their level of uniqueness, but, adds a new layer of problem for the person and even the whole human race.

So, instead of craving for more power, nurture the power you have for human good and more productivity.
